Birth Control: Getting Started and Best Practices

Do antibiotics decrease the effectiveness of my birth control?

Last updated on September 1, 2020

The vast majority of antibiotics have no impact on your birth control's effectiveness. There is only one antibiotic, called rifampin (brand names include Rifadin and Rimactane), that can decrease your birth control’s efficacy.

Doxycycline or Minocycline don’t decrease the effectiveness of your birth control, but they can can cause increased sensitivity to the sun. If you need to take those antibiotics while on birth control, be sure to apply extra sunscreen.

If you have any concerns about other medications you take and their impact on your birth control, please let us know.
