Ella is an emergency contraceptive used for preventing pregnancy after unprotected sex. Missed pills, condom failure and other mishaps happen—that’s where ella comes in. When taken as directed, ella is more effective in preventing pregnancy than other emergency contraception pills. You should take ella as soon as you can following unprotected sex or contraceptive failure (and no later than 5 days after sex). It’s available by prescription only, as a single 30-mg dose. It is not intended for routine use as a contraceptive and will not terminate an existing pregnancy.
